“Marketing Like Jesus (Strategy #14): Ask Questions”

Psychologist and television personality Dr. Phil McGraw has achieved great success with his intervention techniques, which help people to break bad and, often, nasty habits and thought patterns. As the guests on his show attempt to justify their destructive behavior, Dr. Phil famously asks, “How’s that working for you?” Why is this question so powerful? It helps people to think critically about their situations. The question invites them to participate in their own intervention.

Jesus was a master of asking tough questions. Why? He wanted a two-way connection with people. He did not just want to preach at them. He wanted a relationship, and relationships require two-way conversations. Further, questions are the best tools to keep conversations going. One scholar noted that 153 of Jesus’ questions have been preserved. Tom Hughes observed, “Jesus does not have Q and A sessions. He has Q and Q sessions.” Even when Jesus’ opponents tried to corner him with a question, he would often respond with a question.

Here are a few examples of questions that Jesus asked:

“Who do people say I am?”

“What are you doing more than others?”

“What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?”

“Why are you thinking these things?”

“What do you think?”

“What is written in the Law?”

Especially in the Information Age, people want to participate in conversations—not merely lectures. People are not tired of hearing from you; they are tired of hearing from you about you. Social media posts that ask a question almost always generate more interest than any other type of post. People want and need to be heard.

Invite your customers, constituents, and prospects into a conversation with you by questioning them about topics that are relevant to your brand. Help them to buy into your message by inviting their feedback.
